His plays have been produced more than 200 times by national and international first-tier institutions, and he is recipient of 20 of the most prestigious and coveted awards in the Australian creative landscape, including being one of only two three-time winners of the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award. Over the past 44 years, Sewell has consistently worked as playwright, novelist, dramaturg, screenwriter, script editor, lyricist, theatre and film director, lecturer and workshop supervisor. His creative work spans a diverse range of genres, from drama and film/TV to physical theatre, musicals, cabaret and digital content. Together with Louis Nowra, he strongly impacted the overall direction of Australian theatre by steering it away from dominant naturalist traditions towards a less rigid, freer and more internationally engaged theatricality. Sewell’s engagement with industry is exceptional. He has closely collaborated with Australia’s major actors as well as leading and upcoming directors, including Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett, Rachel Griffiths, Toni Colette, Neil Armfield, Sarah Goodes, Simon Phillips, Richard Cottrell and Keith Hack, as well as with newer entrants, such as Zebastian Hunter andCharles Sanders. He also maintains strong connections to leading creatives on the international circuit, such as British icons Christopher Hampton, Sir David Hare, Chris Campbell and David Aukin. Since 2012, Dr Sewell has been the Head of Writing for Performance at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). In this role, he has transformed its former Graduate Diploma into the hugely popular Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) course. With its innovative emphasis on critical thinking, creativity and narratology explored across a broad variety of traditional and non-traditional platforms, Sewell’s teaching has benefitted a new generation of writers currently pushing the boundaries of contemporary Australian performing arts. In addition, he has established a number of new initiatives at NIDA, including a national secondary school outreach program and a formal sponsorship for disabled performers collective Midnight Feast. Sewell is currently writing two new novels, as well as to explore the short story form, anticipating publishing a collection of short stories in 2022.
