Gary was born in Lincoln, England, and grew up on Birchwood Estate. Like most kids of the '60s, it was tough growing up, but the closeness of like-minded families on the estate forged lifelong memories. Gary went to Australia in 1964 as a 6-year-old. He entered the film and TV industry in 1974 at AAV Melbourne, aged 17. He rapidly rose through the ranks and freelanced with Crawford Productions during the '70s on his days off. Eventually, landing at Channel 7 in Brisbane.
He went on his own in 1980 and wrote and directed the award-winning documentary 'Jack The Ripper: The Final Solution', which he shot at Pinewood Studios and on the heavy streets of the east end of London. Sir Michael Caine's company used most of Gary's research for the Jack the Ripper movie version. Gary has a large following of 'Ripper fans' who continually refer to his groundbreaking documentary, He regularly receives emails and constant messages to talk about Jack The Ripper. Channel 5 has recently been in touch about a possible follow-up to the documentary.
Gary writes as a full-time screenwriter; he has written a 6 part Gothic Thriller with supernatural overtones. It's a torrid ride. It ticks all the boxes for great entertainment. The late Sir John Hurt was a supporter and mentor for Gary's Gothic script Hadrianus, John and Gary would converse across the world at hideous times, contributing to Gary's work with Sir John's character he was to play, when John passed, it was a great loss not only to Gary but our entire industry.
The latest offering is 'Mary 3691,' a bittersweet feature script set in 1960s England aimed at a small but tragic window in the life of Mary O'Brien, aka Dusty Springfield. It's an extremely touching script with some real-life personalities. Already, this script is garnering much interest in the UK. Gary is in talks with well-known British actress Joanne Froggatt and plans to work together on projects of interest.
Another script is ready for production, 'Two Penny Prince', a 60's & 70's drama on a brief part of frontman Marc Bolan and the last days of his short but eventful life. His early friendship with David Bowie and how they changed the music scene is phenomenal. It's a heartfelt journey that changed all our lives.
'Jinxx' is his new pilot for thrill seekers of the supernatural kind. If you are into X-Files, then this drama series of four 45-minute episodes is an exciting ride. The first episode is about the Derwent Bridge disaster in Hobart. What happened that day is extraordinary. Producer actress Jennifer Corren has optioned the series from Gary; its expected movement will be early to mid-2025.
Gary has a natural ability to write visually, 45 years of being a cameraman director have paid off handsomely. I love his writing and the choice of excellent soundtracks he partners with his scripts. He is a genuine entertainer. Plus, he's a great guy to deal with on any level, he is not shy in speaking his mind, but he's always constructive and very understanding of our ever-changing industry.
He is also in constant demand for his experience with crews, being a former cameraman. "A lot of producers, believe it or not, don't understand crews at all." Some just need a little guidance and understanding. I'm old school, and the principles are mostly still the same. You have to go into a film or series with some respect for those who will make your reality come true.
